Display Ad Formatting Requirements
Color Formatting: Ad Rates include the use of full color. All ads and all images used in the ad must be created or converted to CMYK color format. Ads and images can not be submitted in RGB color format.
Image Resolution: Images within an ad should be 150 dpi and no larger.
Preferred Formats: The preferred format for ad submission is a PDF file or and EPS file. If you'll be submitting an EPS file you will need to convert the fonts to outlines. The function of converting the fonts to outlines will depend on which program you are using. If you are using Illustrator CS3, fonts are converted to outlines by first selecting all the elements in the design. (if you click outside of the design, to make sure that there is first nothing that is selected, you can then use the keys ‘Control’ and ‘A’ to select all elements). Then go to the Type menu and select Create Outlines. Then go to the File menu, choose Save As and choose the .eps file format.
Font/Text Color Composition: When composing the color(s) you’d like for the fonts/text in your ad, use no more than 2 of the CMYK inks for each color. For instance, create Red using the inks Magenta and Yellow only. This is necessary due to the nature of the Web Press printing process (newspaper press). Web printing is a high speed process that results in slight shifts in the registration of the inks used. As a result, if 3 or 4 inks are used to compose the color of your font(s), there is a high likelihood that any registration variance will result in a blurry look for the text. You can have as many different colors of text as you like, but each color should be comprised of no more than 2 ink colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black).
Background Color for White Text: The same holds true when creating a solid background with white text on top. Use no more than 2 inks. If you are using a solid black background make sure that the black is comprised of only 100% black ink and not of some combination of the for CMYK colors/inks.
Black Text and Black Design Elements: Make sure that all black text is composed of only black ink and not some variant of a 4 ink compilation. The same holds true for gray text.
